Samsung launched its first Odyssey OLED gaming monitor at IFA 2022, and it’s a huge deal since this monitor Series is extremely popular and benefits from an incredible “Odyssey” brand built over many years.

This monitor is an excellent counter to LG, which also launched innovative gaming monitors: the UltraGear 45GR95QE and the Flex bendable monitor.

The technology is not entirely new since the Odyssey OLED G8 monitor features the same QD-OLED panel as the Alienware QD-OLED 34, an acclaimed gaming monitor – perhaps that one was used as a scout?

Note that QD stands for Quantum DOT, a technology that uses charged particles to control light waves and tweak light’s color. It was previously used to ensure superior color precision, but recently, Samsung has found a new usage for it.

In QD-OLED panels, Samsung can use the QD technology to turn a blue light into red and green. Being able to do that has several advantages. Typically, OLED comes with different materials, Blue OLED and Yellow OLED at a minimum. Samsung will only have to produce and deal with one type instead of two.

Secondly, the lifetime of blue is different from yellow. Blue tends to degrade much slower, and the yellow decay can create color accuracy issues (years) down the road. By only having Blue OLED. The color will remain more consistent and more prolonged. Samsung boasts a DCI-99.3% color gamut, which makes this monitor “professional grade.”

This essential technical aside, the monitor is a 34-inch QHD (3,440×1,440) display with a 21:9 aspect ratio (perfect for movies), a 1ms response time, and a refresh rate of 175 Hz. The 1800R curvature ensures a complete immersion for the user – imagine playing MS Flight Simulator with it. Only full VR can beat that, but not for the wide field of view.

You can still use the monitor when your computer is OFF since it accepts video streaming via Samsung Smart Hub. It means that Youtube, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and more services remain available.

The monitor even features an embedded IoT HUB that lets you check on all the compatible smart devices in your home without requiring a phone or computer. The integrated Samsung Gaming Hub lets you stream games from GeForce NOW, Google Stadia, Utomik, and Amazon Luna, so you can almost buy it to play, even if you don’t own a gaming PC.

Like other Odyssey monitors, the design of the OLED G8 is stunning. Users can also adjust the height and tilt for maximum comfort. Samsun says the monitor will arrive at the end of the year – we hope in time for the Holidays shopping.
